United Methodist Volunteers in Mission - 2006

Firelands District
Looking for 3 more Team Members!

El Sembrador – The Firelands District VIM Team is preparing to go the Escuela El Sembrador (School of the Sower) a boarding school for underprivileged Honduran boys. Nestled in the Olancho Valley about seven miles east of Catacamas, Honduras. El Sembrador was founded in 1954 by former WGM missionaries Donald and Twana Hawk. The primary purpose of the school has always been to teach the Word of God with love and a genuine concern for the boys.

Since the first class of 12 students in 1954, more than 8,000 students have been ministered to through El Sembrador’s primary, secondary, vocational, and Bible institute education programs. Many of these young people have become mechanics, lawyers, engineers, accountants, teachers, agriculturists, and pastors.

At any given time, some 150 boarding students study in the various academic programs offered at the school. The primary school accepts boys who have not had the opportunity to complete this level of studies, usually due to financial difficulties. Courses in woodcarving, carpentry, industrial mechanics, and diesel mechanics are offered at the vocational school. Another 150 students come from the nearby town of Catacamas five days a week to attend the junior/senior high school, open to both males and females. And the Bible institute offers students theological, biblical, and practical training for ministry with the Honduran Holiness Church. Each student is given many opportunities to accept the Lord as their Savior.

The farm school is located on more than 2,000 acres of land, used primarily for pasture and the production of corn, sorghum, rice, beans, and garden produce. The school also has approx. 1,000 head of cattle (both beef and dairy), chickens, and a hog farm. These farm animals provide both food and a source of income for El Sembrador.

The VIM Team will leave on Saturday, February 25, 2006 and return on Saturday, March 11, 2006. The cost of the trip is estimated at $1800.00, this includes airfare, food & accommodations, local transportation, departure tax, insurance and other miscellaneous expenses.
